Aftercare.

Proper aftercare is imperative to ensure good healing, to reduce risks of infection, as well as lowering the chance of harming the imagery of a fresh tattoo. By following these simple steps, it will make sure everything goes smoothly and your tattoo heals best as possible.

CLEAR BANDAGE: REMOVE AFTER THREE-FOUR DAYS.

  • When taking the bandage off, it’s best to do it in the shower. Let the water run down the bandage, but not hit the tattoo directly.

  • keep the skin taught and pull the bandage slowly and carefully keeping it close to the skin as you pull.

  • Wash the tattoo immediately with clean hands, lukewarm water, and plain fragrance-free soap (do not rub too hard or vigorously when washing), pat dry with clean paper towel or let air dry.

  • Continue this method of washing 1 time a day for at least the next 1-2 days.

  • if the tattoo looks dry or feels tight/itchy add a very THIN layer of plain fragrance-free lotion; try to only lotion small layers 1-2 times a day. You can do more if needed.

  • the average scab takes about 1-2 weeks to come off.

  • the sun is fresh tattoos worst enemy (tattoos under a year old). The sun fades ink, so make sure to put on sunscreen over your tattoo every time you get sun exposure (SPF 30+). *make sure to only start applying SPF post healing*.

MID HEALING TATTOO.

This tattoo is currently in the scabbing stage of the healing process. Do not pick or itch the scab, let the scab fall off naturally. Small thin layers of lotion 1-2 times day help in this stage.

THINGS TO AVOID:

  • touching, picking, itching, or putting on too much lotion on the tattoo - higher risk of infection or even harming the tattoo imagery.

  • baths, swimming, and hot tubs for the first 2 weeks of healing - no soaking. Showers are fine.

  • any strenuous activity for the first 48 hours of healing, light forms of physical activity (ex. yoga, jogging, etc.) are fine after the first 48 hours. Ideally you would still like to wait another couple of days for more intense forms of physical activity.

  • wearing any tight clothing against the fresh tattoo.

  • avoid your fresh tattoo being directly exposed to the sun, a thin loose layer of clothing ex, long shirt, pants, will act as a SPF barrier while healing. DO NOT bandage it again.

  • avoid using any lotions with ointment properties Ex. no petroleum jelly and no Polysporin.

ALLERGIC REACTIONS CAN HAPPEN.

Although rare, people can have an allergic reactions to the clear bandage used for healing. If you experience extreme itchiness, see a visible red border around the bandage, or develop a rash - take the bandage off immediately. If any of this is to occur during or after your take the bandage off, wash the tattoo with plain soap and water and let it air dry, all side affects will go away in the next couple of days.

(here is an example of an allergic reaction after the client took of the bandage).

Do not hesitate to reach out to your artist and seek medical attention if complications arise or develop during your healing process.
