Aftercare.
Proper aftercare is imperative to ensure good healing, and to reduce risks of infection. At our Halifax tattoo studio, we want your tattoo to heal smoothly and look its best for years to come.
Every Artist may have slight variations to their preferred healing method - if your artist provided specific instructions, always follow those first.
CLEAR BANDAGE: REMOVE AFTER THREE-FOUR DAYS.
Removing Your Bandage:
Remove your bandage in the shower - let warm water run over it, but avoid spraying it directly.
keep the skin taught and pull the bandage slowly and carefully keeping it close to the skin as you pull.
Washing & Moisturizing
Wash the tattoo immediately with clean hands, lukewarm water, and plain fragrance-free soap (do not rub too hard or vigorously when washing), pat dry with clean paper towel or let air dry.
Continue this method of washing 1 time a day for at least the next 1-2 days.
if the tattoo looks dry or feels tight/itchy add a very THIN layer of plain fragrance-free lotion; try to only lotion small layers 1-2 times a day. You can do more if needed.
Healing Timeline
the average scab takes about 1-2 weeks to come off.
the sun is fresh tattoos worst enemy (tattoos under a year old). The sun fades ink, so make sure to put on sunscreen over your tattoo every time you get sun exposure (SPF 30+). *make sure to only start applying SPF post healing*.
Once healed, moisturize your tattoo regularly and protect it from direct sunlight to keep it vibrant long term.

THINGS TO AVOID:
Touching, picking, itching
Over-applying / thick layers of lotion
Swimming, soaking, or hot tubs (first two weeks)
Tight clothing over tattoo area
Direct sunlight - a thin loose layer of clothing ex, long shirt, pants, will act as a SPF barrier while healing. DO NOT bandage it again.
Using any lotions with ointment properties Ex. no petroleum jelly and no Polysporin.
MID HEALING TATTOO.
This tattoo is currently in the scabbing stage of the healing process. Do not pick or itch the scab, let the scab fall off naturally. Small thin layers of lotion 1-2 times day help in this stage.
Possible Allergic Reaction.
Although rare, people can have an allergic reactions to the clear bandage used for healing. If you experience extreme itchiness, see a visible red border around the bandage, or develop a rash - take the bandage off immediately. If any of this is to occur during or after your take the bandage off, wash the tattoo with plain soap and water and let it air dry, all side affects will go away in the next couple of days.
(here is an example of an allergic reaction after the client took the bandage off).
